Speaker Bio
Deborah Matz is a senior attorney in private practice, specializing in not for profit law. Her most recent position was as Senior Vice President, Legal, at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Inc. (LLS) where she established the Society’s first legal department and provided direction, support, and management of LLS’s legal activities. Among her responsibilities were contract review, employee relations, policy development, litigation avoidance, copyright, and trademark advice. She also served as the staff liaison to the LLS Board of Directors providing guidance on the corporation’s bylaws, and advice to the Board on governance issues.
Before joining LLS, Debbie was Senior Director of Risk Management at the Ontario Securities Commission, where she developed and rolled out its first Enterprise Risk Management Framework. Prior to that, Debbie was a partner and General Counsel for Deloitte & Touche in Canada, followed by an assignment in New York where she served as Associate General Counsel for the international Deloitte organization. In this role, Debbie managed claims and risk management, supporting various Deloitte firms in Europe, the Caribbean, and South America in connection with lawsuits, regulatory investigations, and government requirements.
Admitted to the Bar in both the State of New York and the Province of Ontario, Debbie earned her LLB/JD at the Queen’s University Faculty of Law, and her B.A. at the University of Toronto.
